CALADAN GALLERY presents three solo exhibitions from local, National and International artists. Paul Weiner is from the North of Boston area and creates biographical photographs of artists. “I am interested in how we as individuals create a personal identity, through the use of possessions and environment. With our choice of “props” we communicate to the world what parts we are playing. I have an ongoing photographic series illustrating the private creative world of artists. The series both functions as a document recording the environment in which each artist creates their art, as well as an artistic interpretation of what goes on in the artist’s mind at the time of creation.” – Paul Weiner. Kike Mayer comes to the gallery from Argentina, his images balancing the surreal world with the environment they stem from. “The conditions of environment – the isolation of the region and sociopolitical history of Argentina, the simple and direct language of the common people, the crude realism formed from dream images, and Chilota Mythology are the elements that have shaped and molded my work, my life.” – Kike Mayer. Donna Catanzano, a Californian, presents the misguided icons of our times in her humorous collages. “I enjoy creating funny, zany, dream-like digital collages with my favorite tool, Adobe Photoshop. I combine my own photographs and paintings with vintage graphics from the 1960s and earlier. I juxtapose different images to create new realities and make comments on popular culture. My goal is to entice the viewer into the piece through amusement, and then, subtly, challenge them with an underlying complex or sober comment.” – Donna Catanzano. Caladan Gallery is pleased to announce the addition of new member Brandon Friend. We welcome Brandon and his bold and brave paintings. Much of his work is devoted to Social Commentary and Revelation, incorporating Socio-political statements to encourage the alertness of his viewers! This is evident in his works entitled “Stars and Stripes Forever”, as well as “America the Beautiful”. He also uses his medium as an expose of modern American Culture, as evident in his paintings “American Idol” and “Social Climbers”. However, his work is not of a morbid and pessimistic realm, as there is a quiet understanding and forward-thinking element to his images. The works are painted in lush colors and strokes, creating a balance for the literal icons represented. He also presents some primarily abstract paintings, in which the viewer can feast on the color and nebulous beauty of Friend’s inner world. Upcoming exhibitions at Caladan Gallery include “Enigma and Magic” an exploration into the Cryptic and Unknown; and “Open Destiny: New Visual Directions 2005”, which promises to present many national and international artists mirroring their experience of the world view!
